Depending on who you ask, yes and no. Wicca is one of the oldest religions on record, however most of the information known about early Wicca was destroyed by the Catholic and Christian churches. Wicca is known to have been practiced as early as 4000bc in Egypt and in what is now Europe. Do you find this valuable?

I think that you will find that true Wiccans are some of the kindest and most gentle people you could ever want to meet, taking very seriously " Harm Ye None".. Its not just something we say, but something we live, everyday. Its true that the Roman Catholic Church tried to portray us as devil worshipers who sacrificed animals and drank the blood, cast evil spells and allowed evil spirits to take over our bodies and minds, or as we call it today "puting the fear of god into people" to draw them into church and organized religion. They also went as far as to persecute, torture and murder those that followed the old ways, all in the name of christianity. And isn't it strange that all these years later we still have the same stigmatism we had back in those days...how far we have come as a people and as a society. 1  out of 1 found this valuable. Wicca is not an ancient religion, it was brought to the mainstream by Gerald Gardner and is a reconstruction of the witchcraft and shamanic traditions of Europe.
There are many well-known Wiccan writers and teachers that continue to claim a great antiquity for Wicca, or the origins of Wicca. Loretta Orion (herself an initiated Gardenarian witch) in her book "Never Again the Burning times" states clearly that there is little solid proof of modern Wicca's ancient origins, and that Wicca is a modern creation.
However that does not mean that it is not valid.

Basics of Wicca:
The morality of Wicca is based on the ideals of "harm none", "perfect love and perfect trust", and the "Threefold Law". Wiccans use the Greco-Roman idea of the "Four Elements" (Earth, Air, Fire, Water) in their view of cosmology.
The Wiccan cosmos is based primarily on duality (twos: The God and Goddess, Male and Female, Light and Dark) and quadrality (fours: The Four Elements, The Four Seasons)
Wiccans believe in archetypical God and Goddess, with all the God/esses in the World being but facets of these archetypes: "All Gods are One God and All Goddess are One Goddess".
Gods and Goddesses from many cultures and pantheons may be mixed together in Wiccan practices, something known as "eclecticism".
Wicca is a highly individualistic religion that is just as easily practiced on a solitary basis than as a large group.

I was under the impression that the term "Wicca" was fairly new. First sited by Gerald Gardener as "Witta" or "Witte". It also borrows terms and practices from Alister Crowley's Thelema and The Order of the Golden Dawn. over the years, with the introduction of Wicca to new people and places, each has contributed something from an Older Religion or ceremonial practice. Especially Celtic, Germanic, Italian, Roman, Greek, Japanese, Chinese, and Native American. There have even been some patices borrowed or retaken from some Christian faiths; Mostly Catholism. That being said, this does not in any way deminish the validity of Wicca or it's practioners. 2  out of 2 found this valuable. Do you?
