Yule Lore

Yule Lore - WiccanWorldYule (pronounced EWE-elle) is when the dark winter months begin to give way to the lighter ones. Starting the very next morning the suns a bit brighter and the days a bit longer. Yule is the longest night of the year, or the Solstice Night. Pagans around the world awaited the rebirth of the Oak King, the Sun King, or the Life Giver that brought with them Spring and warmed Mother Earth.

Children were taken from home to home with baskets of apples and oranges with wheat stalks and pine boughs. The fruit represented the sun, the boughs, immortality, and the wheat the harvest to come. The homes were decorated with holly and ivy much like today, this was an invitation to the Nature Spirits.

Of course we've all heard of the Yule log. It had to be taken
from the homeowners land or given as a gift. They then decorated it with greenery and poured cider or ale on top and dusted it with wheat flour. Then they set it to fire with a piece of last years log saved just for that purpose. The log would burn all night and then smoulder for 12 days before being put out. Ash was traditionally used.
