Important Facts about Wicca
- Wicca, or eclectic Wicca are indigeous religions of Western Europe. It is one of the oldest religions on the planet.
- A witch and a Wiccan are not necessarily the same thing.
- The term "witch" may have come from either the Old English term "wyk," meaning "To bend or shape," or, the Anglo-Saxon "wit" meaning "To possess knowledge or wisdom."
- Both men and women are called witches.
- The term "warlock" is thought to mean "Oath breaker," or "Sorcerer." It is an old Scottish term.
- "Pagan" is derived from the Latin word "paganus" which means "People of the Earth."
- Other labels for practitioners of the Craft are wicca, wicce, wita, witta or wice.
- Another word applied to broad groups of Pagans is "heathens."
- The term "Book Of Shadows" may have been borrowed from ceremonial magick or other forms of wizardry that were by the upper-class in the middle ages. They called their spell books "grimoires," a word of uncertain etymology.
