Gods and Goddess
Pantheon of Gods and Goddess
Basic Witchcraft is not monotheisticin nature, but polytheistic, in that Witches, like all Pagans, believe in the existence of more then one deity or energy pool. Even Dianic Witches who worship only the Goddess worship Her in the Triple Goddess, or her three forms. Simplistically speaking, Withces believe in both Goddess and a God, as well as other archetypal energies that are aspects or representations of the two main ones.
Webster's Dictionary defines achetype as "the original pattern from which all things of the same type are copies." In other words, regardless of the cultural pantheon, all goddesses are traceable to the original Goddess and all gods to the original God. Archetypes are psychic forces that influences our lives, particularly our spiritual lives. They form an unbreakable and invisible connection between all humans regardless of racial background, and link all humans with the Divine Source, however we view it.
Although Witches may have statues of various goddesses and gods in their sacred space, they do not worship idols. That statues are an inspirational concentration point, used as a pyschic window into the Otherworld. They fully recognize that the statues have no power within them, that the actual archetypal power is not contained in any object. Jung recognized that all deity images, including statues of deities, with thought to be actual or astral, merely represent the basic archetypes of univeral power. With the Goddess and the God , this could be reduced to the titles of Universal Mother and Universal Father .
Having a diversity of deity forms actually allows for noth unity and diversity in a spiritual sense. Witches fully understand that there is a human need for a great varity of spiritual paths, which is why there is no one way to practice Witchcraft or Paganism. They also recognize that deities can be worshipped without mentioning a particular name, although many Witches do use known names, as it is easier to relate to a deity this way.
Wiccan/Pagan spirituality is very different from Orthodox religions in one sharply defined aspect. As Robert Graves wrote in The White Goddess ,
true Pagan spirituality forces one to think on two levels, the mythical and the rational, and to never confuse the two. This means that Witches realize that mythology contains vital clues to spiritual growth and understanding, and that the mythical, whether deity or creatures
